There is a storm coming soon to the Lake Conference.

Chanhassen High School was accepted by the Lake Conference Executive committee on Tuesday.

“We are delighted to remain part of the Lake Conference,” Chaska High Assistant Principal/Activities Director Dick Ungar said. “And we are happy that the Lake Conference has accepted Chanhassen High.”

Ungar starts July 1 as the Chanhassen Athletic Director, when Troy Stein takes over as the Chaska AD.

The move will take full effect with the opening of Chanhassen High [1] in the fall of 2009. The Storm's inclusion will make the Lake a 12-team conference.

Chaska High School [2] plans to remain a member of the Lake, which it has resided since 1994.

The District 112 high schools are expected to open with 1,300 students apiece in 2009.

While the schools will field separate athletic teams in most sports, there will be several sports which will seek a cooperative agreement.

“As both schools grow,” he said, “the need for cooperative teams will diminish. But in 2009, we may not have enough students to field two teams in some sports.”

Ungar said the District 112 sports seeking a co-opagreement will likely include wrestling, swimming and gymnastics and girls' hockey.

Ungar indicated that the Lake Conference will facilitate alternative schedules in sports such as football for smaller teams within the conference.
