An overhead heating unit fell in a kindergarten classroom at Guardian Angels Catholic School today, striking three students.
One student was transported to the hospital via ambulance with a reported broken leg, said Principal Nancy Ronhovde. The other two students remained at school and even participated in the relocated class Valentine's Day party.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Chaska police and fire responded. A note was sent home with students notifying parents of what had occurred. The injured student was transferred to St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee and later to Hennepin County Medical Center.
"I hope it was just because of traumatic effect," said Ronhovde.
Kindergarten classes are being moved to St. Francis Hall in Guardian Angels Catholic Church for the immediate future. Friday's preschool classes were cancelled.
Overhead radiators are only located on the lower level of the school where the kindergarten and preschool classes are held. According to Ronhovde, the lower level of the school will not be used until engineers have assessed the situation. For now, Ronhovde says the area has been secured.
Guardian Angels students were assembled this afternoon and given an explanation of the incident before being led in a prayer for the students involved.
"The three students involved in this highly unusual accident are in the thoughts and prayers of the remaining students and staff in the Guardian Angels community," stated Ronhovde.

THIS WAS A FREAK ACCIDENT. There is no blame. Mrs. Ronhovde, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Ward, Father Paul, and all the teachers and staff stayed calm, took care of the injured children, and ensured that the uninjured children were safe. As parents of a GA kindergarten student who witnessed the accident, we wish to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone at GA, and our heartfelt prayers for the children and their families.
