Summer volleyball, basketball camps offered

Youth volleyball players are invited to participate in the upcoming Chaska Summer Volleyball Camp.

The camp is set for June 23-26 at the Chaska High School gyms. It is open to all District 112 students and Chaska Community Center members entering kindergarten through ninth grade in the 2008-09 school year.

Each camper will receive a volleyball. Camp instructors include the staff and players from Chaska High School, as well as other high school or college coaches.

The camp is designed to teach players the fundamentals of passing, defense, attacking, setting, blocking, serving and team play.

Fee is $50 for players in K-3, $55 for players in grades 4-5 and $70 for players in grades 6-9.

High school volleyball camp

A summer volleyball camp for District 112 students entering grades 9-12 for the 2008-09 school year is set for July 30-31 at Chaska Middle School West.

Players will be divided into teams, with the two sessions focusing on teamwork, advanced offensive and defensive systems.

Camp instructors include University of Minnesota-Duluth head volleyball coach Jim Boos and staff.

Fee is $80, and each camper receives a volleyball. Enrollment is limited to the first 45 players.

Youth basketball camps

The Chanhassen Recreation Center will host Steve Brown’s Fundamental Basketball Camp on June 16-17 for boys in grades 5-8.

Coaches at the camp include Brown, a former guard at South Dakota State University. He went on to coach at the University of Minnesota under Jim Dutcher, coached with Flip Saunders and was a head coach at Michigan Tech.

The coaching staff also includes former Gopher and NBA player Jim Petersen, who currently is a TV analyst for the Timberwolves.

Brown also has a camp scheduled for girls in grades 5-8 on June 18-19 at the Chan Rec Center.

The camp meets from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. each day, and the fee is $60.

The purpose of the camp is for players to learn the proper fundamentals of basketball. Coaches will work on the mechanics of shooting, ballhandling, dribbling, passing and footwork as well as other important game skills. Each participant will receive a T-shirt.
