Jack was a good man. We went to the same church and one time we were at Menard's in Eden Prairie. We didn't have a truck to haul home what we had purchased. Jack offered to and did haul it to Victoria for us, though he didn't know us very well. He was a very kind person!

In 2006, the Herald

In 2006, the Herald published a story on a heat wave striking the area.

At the time, I talked with Jerome Meuwissen about the temperature. Despite the heat and his 84 years of age, he was out collecting cans to donate to a Guardian Angels aluminum can fundraiser. He had already collected 50 pounds of cans for the drive.

He related that the heat didn’t bother him, but he recalled hotter days in the 1930s. At that time, Meuwissen was cutting weeds by Chaska’s downtown railroad tracks. The hot weather had killed the hayfields, and Meuwissen was giving the weeds to his farmer grandfather, so he could feed his cattle.

"Every farm around was looking for hay," he said, recalling that he saw farmers up and down the highways using scythes to cut grass in ditches to feed their cattle. “This here is a picnic."

I picture him as a boy, helping his grandfather in any way he could so the livestock could survive a drought during one of the worst depressions our country had ever seen.

I guess Meuwissen’s tale spelled out how much we complain nowadays.

I'm sad and angry that his life ended at an unsafe intersection in downtown Chaska, while he was trying to walk to church.

If you've visited nearly as many countries as Florence Johnson, you might consider signing up at www.mosttraveledpeople.com and entering the global race to be the first person to see all of the world's 673 places. The current leader (and Web site owner) Charles Veley has 43 places left to visit before being able to claim that he has been "everywhere."

I was feeling good about my world travels until I saw where some of these people have gone. Time to pad the bank account and make a run at the title when I'm a bazillionaire.

Protests took place

Protests took place yesterday at UW-Stout after members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church arrived on campus claiming the three fire victims died for Minnesota and Wisconsin's sins. You can read more about it here: http://www.leadertelegram.com:80/story-news.asp?id=BGACMDB4BHV

Rest in peace Amanda. You will be dearly missed by those who knew you, and even by those us who never had the honor to meet you. May your smile live on forever. You will forever be a shining star for those lives that you have touched.

To Sean,
An Irish Lullaby by

To Sean,
An Irish Lullaby by J.R. Shannon

Over in Killarney
Many years ago,
Me Mither sang a song to me
In tones so sweet and low. Just a simple little ditty,
In her good ould Irish way,
And l'd give the world if she could sing
That song to me this day.

Chorus:
"Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry!
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby.".

Oft in dreams I wander
To that cot again,
I feel her arms a-huggin' me
As when she held me then.
And I hear her voice a -hummin'
To me as in days of yore,
When she used to rock me fast asleep
Outside the cabin door.

Chorus:
"Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry!
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby."

Dave Combs,
Sean Humphrey, I

Dave Combs,
Sean Humphrey, I am saddened by the passing of my friend and neighbor Sean, a lad whose life I will celebrate with my family and friends. My heart goes out to Faith, Bob and Nick.

I worked a late shift and Barbequed late into the evening, now and then Sean would stop by and share some wings, ribs or shrimp with my family.

Sean had so many friends I use to call him the King of Chaska. I know they will not forget about him. So in his wake I raise a toast to his warm smile, friendliness and great spirit.
Keep on rocking buddie.
