What's in heavy rotation on your iPod these days?

I'm loving Pink's "U + Ur Hand," Nelly Furtado's "Say it Right," Omarion's "Ice Box" and Fall Out Boy's "This Ain't A Scene, It's an Arms Race." Mims, not so much.

I'm just old. Very, very old.

I've got Stray Cats, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, and Depeche Mode on my current playlist. And some old Billy Joel, before he started to suck.

I show my age through my hot pink iPod Shuffle.

Back to page top

I like jam bands, so these are some musicians many people may not hear very often, but it is good rock 'n' roll none-the-less. So if you are daring, shuffle some of these bands into your iPod.
I love Phish, they are a main stay in my iPod, and suggest any of their albums.
I recently purchased a band named moe.'s new album The Conch, which is very good.
I also bought an album called Solace by Xavier Rudd that is pretty mellow, if your not into buying an entire album by someone you haven't heard of, I suggest the track Let me be. One of my favorite new bands is Umphrey's McGee, they have two albums available, Safety in Numbers and Anchor Drops, both are worth a listen.
Those are just a small number of bands in my iPod. If you take my advice, I hope you like it. There's a lot more where that came from.

Arcade Fire has a similar sound to that of John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band's sound on the Eddie & the Cruisers soundtrack. The song "Keep the Car Running" sounds a little bit like "On the Dark Side". Do you hear a similarity in sound or is it just me?

You listen to Billy Bragg? I thought I was the only person in the United States who had any clue who Billy Bragg even is!

Of course, I often have to skip songs that I find politically irritating, but he's got an amazing voice, and I really like a lot of his stuff.

Billy Bragg and Wilco's "Mermaid Avenue" and "Mermaid Avenue Vol. 2" are two of my favorite albums.

I share an mp3 player with my 10-year-old daughter, so we try to keep it filled with songs we both like. Right now I've got most of Nirvana "Incesticide" on there, most of Paul Westerberg's (solo) & Replacements music, and Pearl Jam "Pearl Jam". She really likes Green Day, so the ones that are appropriate are also on there. We both love the song "In a Big Country" by Big Country so I'm thinking I'll download that one soon.

"Dreams" by the Cranberries is my absolute favorite song to hear in the morning! Did you know Delores O'Reiden is coming out with a solo album?

Also, Lily Allen and the Pogues are fab but Ray Lamontagne has my heart forever. I will admit I'm very intrigues by the Prototypes and Annie, though. I'm a sucker for foreign pop. Will have to check that out. Thanks for the suggestions!

If it wasn't for listening to "The Current" (89.3 FM) I'd probably not know about Mates of State. Their music is a refreshing change from the same old dreck on commercial radio and they've earned a spot on my iPod. I've also started to dig both some new and oldish Regina Spektor. Good stuff. And I can't leave without mentioning one of my faves -- Social Distortion.

Back to page top

Thank goodness for The Current for sure. They have been a godsend to radio here in the Twin Cities. I knew Regina Spektor was starting to gain some attention when my 18-year-old cousin from International Falls said she liked her. They do not get a variety of music up there so that was a very good sign.

I only have the original Mermaid Avenue album. I like the "Don't Try This at Home" album more, though.

What about Robert Earl Keen? Any of you folks ever listen to him? He's a good ol' Texas Aggie (WHOOP!!), and was a roommate of Lyle Lovett in college. I have all his albums and cry if I have to wait too long for a new release.

"Gringo Honeymoon," by Robert Earl Keen, is a great album. "Merry Christmas from The Family," is a disfunctional holiday classic.

Townes Van Zandt is another terrific Texas musician. There are a lot of hard-hitting singer-songwriters out of Texas. Can you name any more?

Back to page top

You're talking to an old Texas gal, here, Mark! OF COURSE I can name more. Here are some of my favorites:

Buddy Holly
Bob Wills
Jesse Dayton
Steve Earle
Nanci Griffith
Roy Orbison
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Pat Green
Davin James
Trish Murphy
George Jones

and last. but certainly not least...
The incomparable, the one, the only, the red-headed stranger... Willie Nelson

Some of my favorite Robert Earl albums are his earlier pieces - West Textures is an amazing storytelling album: the song "Mariano" is a masterpiece and "Copenhagen" is hysterical.

When I was in college, I used to get to hear REK every two or three months. And when I lived in Houston, I saw him at least twice a year. Now that I am up in Minnesota, I have only been able to see him once - last April when I was 9 months pregnant with my 4th child. I was quite a sight - whooping it up with all the other Aggies while trying not to topple over.

I'm so excited that someone else out there even knows who REK is!

The list of great musicians from Texas is amazing, from Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, down through Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughn and one of my newer favorites, Los Lonely Boys.
Henry Garza and his two brothers are killer musicians with great vocals, and amazing showmen to boot. "Heaven" from their self-titled debut album would be a good addition to any iPod.

I went to SXSW when I was in college. I was on the committee at A&M that brought the concerts, so I was an actual registered attendee to the conference (I SAW HUEY LEWIS IN PERSON!), and I also got a wristband for all the concerts. And Texas A&M paid for it! Of course, I was only 20, so many of the venues wouldn't let me in the door! Ah, to be young again!

TXAggie - not music related, but I'm in your old stomping ground down here in College Station, TX :) They've got some very weird traditions down here!

And on a music related note, I'm only 2 hours from SXSW! Would LOVE to be there, but sadly, cannot be. Been listening to the Current online though, since they've been broadcasting live from there. woo hoo! Maybe I can make Austin City Limits instead....

Back to page top

Well, burying their mascot in the football field after he passes, so that he's facing the scoreboard to see the score...that's a little odd. I guess it's kind of cute too...

Another weird one is that if the mascot comes into a classroom and barks, class is immediately dismissed. I guess that one is pretty awesome though!

My husband's going to grad school here, so that's why we're here :)

Reveille is highest ranking member of the Corps of Cadets. She rocks. And she likes football, so we bury her so that she can see the scoreboard.

Little bit of trivia... Reveille VI barked so hard at a football game when she was a puppy that she developed epilepsy. Poor dog.

My most favorite words to hear when I am in College Station are:
"Now entering from the North end of Kyle Field.... The world famous Fightin' Texas Aggie Band!"

I miss College Station. :(

Back to page top

I'm going to Los Angeles this coming weekend, so I made a "Hollywood mix" for my iPod. On it:

"Los Angeles" by Frank Black
"Santa Monica" by Everclear
"Coming into Los Angeles" by Arlo Guthrie
"Screenwriter's Blues" by Soul Coughing
"California" by Phantom Planet
"Hollywood" by Madonna
"I Remember California" by REM
"Los Angeles I'm Yours" by the Decemberists

I love how Frank Black pronounces it "Loss Angle-is" and Arlo Guthrie and the Decemberists pronounce it "Loss Angel-eeeees".

I know I'm missing some other good LA/Hollywood/California-related songs - anyone have any more recommendations?
