Is Jay-Z signaling a recession?

Filed under:

There is something quite alarming on the recently released “Blue Magic” music video.

The song, by the wildly successful rap artist and businessman Jay-Z, is on an album of songs accompanying/inspired by the Ridley Scott movie “American Gangster,” starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

But it wasn’t sex, drugs, violence or explicit language that shocked my conscience.

It was the Euros.

The Jay-Z video flashed large stacks of €500 Euros.

When I start seeing rap stars flashing euros instead of U.S. dollars, I know our economy is in trouble.

Jay-Z carries a lot of weight. Just look at what happened when he began boycotting Cristal champagne.

It’s sad that rap stars can no longer show their style with a good old $500 U.S. bills (featuring President McKinley) and now need to flash €500 Euros (featuring some sort of suspension bridge).

I don’t need the chairman of the Federal Reserve to tell me about the state of our economy. I just need Jay-Z, the new Alan Greenspan.

I don’t blame Jay-Z. A stack of €50,000 in Euros would equal $72,000 in U.S. currency. And you’d need 144 $500 bills to equal a stack of 100 €500 Euros. I don't know if even Jay-Z has that large a money clip.

When I start seeing rap stars throw around the Canadian Loonie, then I know our economy is really in trouble.

If Jay-Z was a real baller, he'd be flashing pounds instead of Euros. At 2 pounds to 1 dollar, that's where the $$$s at.

Mollie, I'm so disappointed you would question of all people, Jay-Z's financial status. CEO of Def Jam, just sold Rockafella Clothing for Millions (still chairman), Ace of Spades (champaign- also seen in the video $800 bottle) Founder, 40/40 club (where the video was shot- owner).... need I say more. Oh yea, forgot to mention the chump change he makes from album sales where he pockets $0.85 of every dollar. Yea, I think that qualifies him for being a legitimate baller.

I still like Jay-Z, even if he flashes Euros instead of "dead presidents."

Jay-Z is just helping to promote global thinking and culture (much like Jackie Kennedy brough chic French clothing design to America.)

If Jay-Z is able to bring back pill-box hats, ala Jackie Kennedy, I'll be even more impressed as to his pop culture/fashion influence.

As long as Jay-Z and his posse avoid breaking out in some kind of Micheal Flatley "Riverdance" moves in their next video, I think we'll be OK.

Those feet-flyin' no hand-movin' kinda dances scare the heck outta me. The 'euros' can keep 'em.

This is an interesting observation, but I get the feeling that the Euro isn't so much a status symbol because of the exchange rate so much as it's an implication of travel, and involvement in international business affairs that requires large stacks of cash in different currencies.

Jay-Z apparently kicked the door in, regarding acceptance of Euros.

The New York Villager recently carried a short story about a businessman who accepts Euros at his liquor store.

The New York Times also carried a story about Euros, noting that businesses are catering to European tourists, given the devalued dollar.

I really like Jay-Z irrespective of whether he shows out dollars or euros. But it’s an indigestible reality that the economy is slowing down. Hope history of 2000-2001 does repeat itself once again!!!
